PROPS & SCENERY
FROM SPACESHIPS TO SET DESIGN AND MORE
"So here's the fun stuff. I always wanted my sons to have the best Halloween costumes...until they grew older, could decide for themselves what they wanted to be and preferred something from the store. 'Eternal Midnight' and 'Magic & Mirth' were the second part of a 2 part contest for The Beaux Arts Ball. The event required 4 structures based on the theme of the event. The first part was building the scale model of your design, and if chosen, were given a stipend and less than 30 days to build it in time for the event. The Snow Speeder? I had the blue-prints for it and it was a ship that was relatively small to fit in the backyard. One of those "let's see if I can do it" projects. Sitting in that cockpit felt like the real thing and I would've killed to have one of those when I was a kid."
THE PLAGUE DOCTOR'S STALLION
In the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, Plague Doctors, fitted with special beak-like masks, treated victims of the raging Bubonic Plague. These physicians rarely cured their patients and served to keep count of the death tolls. The 'beak' portion of the mask was filled with herbs, spices and straw to prevent the physicians from being exposed to 'putrid air' which it was believed at the time, to be the cause of diseases. The now-obsolete Miasma Theory claimed that epidemics were caused from rotting organic matter, also referred to as 'Night Air.'
The Plague Doctor's Stallion is constructed from a children's bouncy horse, plague doctor mask, various steampunk-inspired canisters and equipment including a vintage bug sprayer, gauges and hoses. A reclaimed phone receiver is fitted to supply fresh air to the wearer via conduits at the base of the mask and antique caster wheels adorn each hoof.
